Learning at Home

Throughout the year we will be updating this page with a variety of resources that we use in class and that you can do at home with your student. Login information for Raz-Kids was sent home earlier this year with your child. If you are unsure of your student's password please email their teacher.

Spelling with Students

We have begun weekly spelling in Grade 1. Students receive their words each Monday and are given time each day during Literacy Centers to practice these words in a number of fun ways! On Fridays we get together in small groups and show what we know. Students will bring home their spelling show what you know each Friday and they can continue practicing these words with you at home.

There is a lot of research that shows practicing spelling words both in the classroom and at home can help students both in their writing and their reading!

We will post the words each Monday on the blog and printed lists will be sent home in SMILE folders!

Looking through the Lens of Literacy

Over the last few weeks we have been focussing on expanding our literacy knowledge. Students are learning how to use books to find Math, Science, and Social Connections. We are learning that books can shape the way we think about topics and the way we see the world around us.

For example, in Social studies we began to learn about what a time line is by reading "The Oak Tree." We learned that trees have rings on them for each year they have been growing. We then created our own timelines of important events that have happened in our lives. We are going to continue exploring timelines of both our lives and Calgary over the next several weeks. Ask me what some important milestones are in my life that I put on my timeline.

We are also learning to look at books through a Mathematician lens. We have read multiple books such as "One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab" and "The Mitten." We recognized that if we add together the legs of animals we can create our own math problems. After learning about different animals and their attributes we created our own story books. Ask me some other ways that we can add animals together. We are so excited to continue using Literacy in our Math lessons!

We encourage you when reading with your students to ask them questions about what they are reading. Find out where they see Math in the book or how can we look at this book as a Scientist.

Exploring Winter

We have been exploring Winter over the last two weeks. Using our 5 senses we talked about what we see, smell, touch and hear in the winter months. Even though we don't have a lot of snow right now we know that in the winter we see snow and if we touch it the snow is really cold on our hands! Ask me how I use my other senses to find signs of winter.
On our Community Walk last week we noticed so many signs of Winter. We looked at Pine Trees and even noticed that some of the needles on the trees were turning blue! Ask me why? We learned a new skill called "Zoom Out, Zoom In" to help us sketch some signs of winter that we saw.

We also began talking about what happens to animals in the winter. Why don't we see insects, bears or geese in the winter? Where do they go? Students will continue to explore what happens to some of their favourite animals each year. We loved reading this book and it helped us to start our exploration of animals in the winter.

There are so many great things about winter and we can't wait to keep investigating seasonal changes
